Parent/child networking is a collaborative mesh system that allows ultra-low-cost Bluetooth tags to perform like full GPS trackers. Unlike conventional Bluetooth solutions, it requires no fixed infrastructure, making it the most cost-effective way to deploy active tracking on pallets, crates, totes and roll cages. The system uses two types of tracker: parent and child. Parent trackers transmit data directly to the Sensize platform using the LTE cellular network. Child trackers send their data to nearby parent trackers, which relay it to the platform. In effect, parent trackers act as wireless hotspots for the children, providing a gateway for their data. The benefits of parent/child networking Parent/child networking offers three important advantages over conventional tracking technologies:  It is much cheaper to deploy than traditional tracking systems.  It does not require permanently installed infrastructure.  It enables different supply chain users to collaborate, maximizing coverage and further reducing costs for everyone. How parent/child asset tracking reduces cost In a conventional GPS tracking system, every tracker needs its own cellular radio. Cellular modules, SIM cards and the larger batteries they require are expensive. Operator data fees add further cost. Together, these make traditional GPS trackers prohibitively expensive for large fleets of reusable containers. In a parent/child deployment, more than 90% of assets carry child trackers. These use Bluetooth technology and contain no cellular radio, making them less than one-tenth the cost of a conventional GPS tracker Sensize parent trackers do include LTE cellular radios, but only a small proportion of assets, typically under 10%, need to be equipped with them. This architecture is what makes parent/child networking so cost-effective, and ideally suited for tracking low-cost reusable assets such as crates, pallets and roll cages. Zero infrastructure If tag cost were the only factor, RFID stickers would win every time. RFID is a useful technology, but it cannot deliver true “GPS-like” tracking. An RFID tag is only detected when it passes within a meter or two (3-6 ft) of a reader capable of energizing and scanning it. Even the most powerful RFID readers typically have a range of only a couple of meters. By contrast, a Sensize child tracker transmits reliably over 50–100 meters, providing far broader and more continuous visibility. While it is sometimes possible to install RFID infrastructure at a few key sites, there is no practical way to deploy it everywhere. A typical retail supply chain includes thousands of locations, often operated by different companies. The cost of visiting all these sites to install, integrate, and maintain readers is prohibitive, which limits RFID’s usefulness as a wide-area tracking technology. Implementing RFID across your logistics operations is a critical first step for anyone looking to keep track of their assets through distribution channels. For many companies in the logistics space, it can be a costly and time-consuming endeavour, so it’s important that you are making the most out of your RFID technology. At Sensize, we call implementation of RFID tech the “ultimate first step towards a streamlined supply chain”. But why is that? Why do companies start their tracking journey with RFID technology? RFID technology stands for Radio-Frequency Identification. It uses electromagnetic fields to automatically detect, and track tags attached to anything on your supply chain. That could be vehicles, pallets, roll cages, or any type of reusable packaging. These tags contain a unique digital identification meaning they can be tracked without the need to scan a barcode or even see the tag directly at all. Therefore, logistics managers can completely automate the documentation of shipments moving in and out of warehouses or stores and so, because of this, RFID has become a vital part of many supply chains. For logistic managers looking to explore the capabilities that asset tracking can offer, it’s the best first step, but it’s not perfect. The problems with RFID It’s a catchy headline, but here at Sensize, we don’t think RFID has many problems. However, if you're managing complex supply chains, you may have noticed some limitations and challenges: Location gaps RFID is great at checkpoint tracking – it knows when an item enters or leaves a specific area. But what happens between those points? Large facility challenges In massive warehouses, knowing that a pallet has arrived somewhere in the building is helpful, but not specific enough for optimal efficiency. Limited data insights While RFID provides basic tracking, it doesn't offer the rich, near-real-time data needed for deep supply chain optimisation. Of course, Tag Collision and Reader Collision, where data can become confused due to too many tag/reader interactions at once, can also cause problems for your operations. RFID can also pose a small security risk, as RFID tags can be read by anyone with a compatible reader. If tags have unique serial numbers, these identifiers can be associated to individual consumers creating a potential privacy concern. But the biggest problem with RFID is, if you want to operate with RFID gates, the amount of investment required in its initial installation can be substantial. With such steep investment costs, it’s vital that your supply chain is set up in a way that allows you to make the most out of the data you’re collecting from your tracking efforts. For most of the past century, logistics companies have been judged by their ability to move physical objects rather than digital bits. Investors valued fleets, depots and container pools much like railways or shipping lines: capital intensive, operationally complex and with structurally low margins. Efficiency mattered, but it was mechanical efficiency, not digital leverage, that moved the dial. That assumption is now changing. With over 12,000,000,000 returnable assets in circulation, a quiet shift is underway as logistics firms digitize their physical networks and protect their assets. In capital markets, the consequences are clear. Companies positioning themselves as digital logistics platforms are attracting higher valuations than analog peers. The reason is straightforward: investors reward scalable, data-driven business models more generously than asset-heavy operators dependent primarily on utilization and cost control. Digitization, in short, is a driver of enterprise value. The valuation gap between analog and digitally-enabled reusable container pooling Growth in traditional logistics requires more pallets, more trucks, more depots and more labor. Returns scale with capital deployed. Digitally-enabled logistics scales differently. Once infrastructure for capturing and analyzing data is in place, incremental growth becomes less capital intensive and more margin accretive. Recurring digital revenues and proprietary datasets create room for growth. Investors distinguish between infrastructure businesses and technology platforms. The former offer stable cash flow. The latter offer scalability and long-lasting competitive advantage from data assets. Logistics firms that embed digital visibility into their operations can combine both characteristics. This is particularly relevant in sectors such as reusable container pooling, where large fleets of shared assets move continuously between manufacturers, retailers and distribution networks. Why container pooling needs connected devices But digitization in logistics faces a practical constraint: most supply chains lack reliable primary data about physical assets. Enterprise systems track orders and invoices with precision. They are far less certain about where a pallet actually is, how long it has been idle or whether a shipment met temperature requirements. Such gaps lead to a poor-quality user experience and challenges to the supply chain if it is reliant on data. Reuse proved cheaper than disposal, enabling Brambles to offer a better product at lower cost while turning a tidy profit. The model flourished. Brambles became a giant, running a pool of hundreds of millions of pallets. Many other pooling companies were founded in their wake. Today, billions of reusable containers, from grocery crates to roll cages to boxes for car engines, circle the globe. Sputnik 1 caused a sensation when it was launched by the Soviet Union in 1957. Coming only two years after Moscow’s first thermonuclear test, the first man-made satellite seemed to confirm that the West was falling behind in the Cold War. American physicists were told to learn as much as possible. By studying its steady radio transmissions, they confirmed that Sputnik was in a stable orbit that circled Earth every 12 hours. They could calculate exactly when it would rise over the horizon at any location. With the maths reversed, they realised that the same method could be used to locate the observer. Navigation using celestial bodies was nothing new. Sailors had been doing it for centuries. But a system that used artificial satellites offered something faster and far more precise. The obstacle was cost. One satellite was useless. You needed at least four in view at once. That meant a constellation of 25 or more at a time when only one existed. So the question was simple... what purpose could justify the expense? The strategic rationale The answer came from the logic of mutually-assured destruction. Nuclear deterrence relied on the ability to launch a counterattack after a first strike. Missiles based on land or in airfields were vulnerable. If they could be eliminated in a surprise strike, deterrence collapsed. Submarine-launched missiles were the answer. Submarines could hide underwater, survive an attack and strike back. But there was a problem. Missiles fired from a moving submarine were extremely inaccurate. To plot a missile path, you need to know the precise launch point. On land that was easy. At sea it was a major challenge, but Sputnik offered a way out. This was the real reason GPS was created: to make submarine-launched missiles accurate enough to reduce the risk of nuclear war. The design assumptions Today there are many related systems such as Galileo in Europe, Glonass in Russia, BeiDou in China and QZSS in Japan. Together they form the global navigation satellite system. The chips are smaller and far cheaper. But the physics behind the system has not changed. GPS was designed for submarines and the assumptions were clear.
